Clean, but a bit mean

We’ve talked about reading labels before here. Important? Yes. Confusing? ABSOLUTELY! Let’s start with cleaning products. Did you know manufacturers of household cleaning products are not legally required to disclose all the ingredients? So if you’re one of the more than 50% of Australians trying to avoid toxic chemicals entering your home, how on earth can you tell what’s what?

Many of the big players are congratulating themselves for signing up to the voluntaryWhat’s In It” initiative (you can read more about it here). Yes, it’s a step in the right direction. But even being part of this non-compulsory programme doesn’t mean participating companies will list their ingredients on the actual product label. It may be on a website or “other electronic means” – a bit useless when 95% of consumers rely on product labels for information.

But we can use this to our advantage. Compare labels. Are all the ingredients listed? If not, think twice. But if a product proudly displays all their ingredients on the label, then you can take comfort that you are dealing with a responsible manufacturer who respects consumers, and makes it easier to choose what chemicals we bring into our homes. Ecostore have hit the nail on the head. They say the reason they list all ingredients on their products is because they "believe it's important so that people can easily identify and research every ingredeint." Hear, hear!
