Kale: one of the latest 'superfoods' but it has a very strong taste, loved by some, hated by others, well kale chips are the best snack EVER!
You may have read a lot about kale and a lot about dehydrated foods? One of the purposes of dehydrated foods is to turn those foods that we would usually cook into a delicious palatable foodstuff without cooking, thereby getting the benefit of the food in its raw state.
Ooh, but have you tried some of those dehydrated snacks? I am not a fan, they just taste so dry and powdery and of course they make you thirsty. Many fruit and veggies contain an awful lot of water; you can spot the obvious ones like watermelon (95%), grapefruit (90%) and cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, celery...all contain high amounts of water so by dehydrating them you are essentially removing all thier water content so we have to drink more water to compensate! I don't know about you but I struggle to consume my 1.5-2 litres without the pressure of having to drink more!
So here is my solution - a secret that I have kept close to my heart for many a month now and used to delight many a guest. I am prepared to share this secret with you dear readers - the best way to eat kale...Kale Chips!
I find it works best with the dark tightly curled stuff but it all works well.
A few points to note...
Every oven is different so I suggest you keep checking. I need to turn mine halfway through cooking and move them about a bit.
They should take 20-30 mins depending on your oven.
Use coconut oil if you prefer.
My little girl loves them quite salty but try a light hand with the salt first time and add more next time if necessary (I generally don't use salt in cooking so I figure this salt won't hurt me).
They tend not to last long in our household but if you find yourself with some left over just keep them in an airtight container and they will last a few day. Crisp them up again with a few minutes in the oven.
I have never added flavourings but you may like to try paprika or chilli? Let me know how you go.
