Today is the day to take on your plastics drawer - you know the one…. there’s one in every kitchen! Unless you are extremely well organised, it is usually the one at kids level that is particularly a mess, with random containers that didn’t dry properly in the dishwasher all thrown in on top of one another, and a whole bunch of lids and containers that don’t match....

Ok folks, let’s talk about plastics. There’s a lot we’re still learning about plastics but one thing we do know is that many of them contain some nasty hormone disrupting chemicals that can leach into your food and drink – particularly when heated. So let’s avoid that situation. Firstly never microwave in plastic. (That includes covering the food with cling-film, just use paper towel instead.)
Secondly, today is the day to take on your plastics drawer - you know the one…. there’s one in every kitchen! Unless you are extremely well organised, it is usually the one at kids level that is particularly a mess, with random containers that didn’t dry properly in the dishwasher all thrown in on top of one another, and a whole bunch of lids and containers that don’t match. Inspect them closely. If any of them have any scratches in them then you need to throw them out immediately. Next throw out any containers that don’t have lids, and any lids that don’t have containers. Come on, you can do it and trust me you’ll feel much better afterwards!
Now it’s just a case of not buying any more! When it comes time to replace them, just buy those glass storage containers instead. (eg Pyrex – available in supermarkets and department stores and online). They double as cookware, food tastes better in them, and you don’t have to worry about nasty hormone disrupting chemicals leaching into your food.
