Worldwide, dietary guidelines have been influenced by nutrients rather than food. But we don’t eat nutrients. We eat food. Well, Australia is leading the way with the new draft dietary guidelines issued by the NH&MRC, which are hoped to make it easier for everyone to understand by focusing on food instead of nutrients.

It’s been 8 years since the dietary guidelines for Australians have been revised. So what’s changed?
And that familiar food pyramid? GONE. Check out the proposed new visual here. Many people have differing opinions on what constitutes a healthy diet. But it’s great to see that there is opportunity for everyone to have a say. You can read through the draft guidelines or provide your feedback (by 29 February here.
My suggestion? Nothing really beats Michael Pollan's succinct mantra from In Defense of Food:
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
